Rotational and domain wall motion aftereffect in a patterned array of small particles
Aftereffect for magnetization processes by rotation and by domain wall motion was investigated on the same, single domain, two-state system of a square 2D (two-dimensional) array of garnet particles. Aftereffect measurements were performed magnetooptically. The particles are thermally stable, the particle energy is 10(-6) erg compared to the thermal energy of 10(-12) erg. No aftereffect of rotation switching of the system of "up" and "down" magnetized particles could be observed at room temperature. At increased temperatures thermally activated switching, very weakly depending on magnetic field, is observed. Each individual particle can be demagnetized into a metastable stripe domain structure. The barrier for DW (domain wall) motion is much lower than the barrier for rotation, and a significant aftereffect was measured on the same particles, demagnetized into a domain structure. The observed time dependence for DW aftereffect is exponential, M(t)/Ms=d* exp(-et), where d=0.04, and e=1/tau follows the increase of the magnetization with field, de/dH=0.021 /s/Oe
Iron silicide nanostructures prepared by e-gun evaporation and annealing on Si(001)
Iron silicide nanostructures were grown on Si(001) by strain-induced, self-assembly
method. E-gun evaporated iron particles were deposited both onto room temperature and high
temperature Si substrates, and were further annealed in situ. The initial Fe thickness was in the
0.1-6 nm range and the annealing temperatures varied between 500 and 850°C. The phases and
structures formed were characterized by reflection high energy electron diffraction and by
scanning electron microscopy. The electrical characteristics were investigated by I-V and C-V
measurements, and by deep level transient spectroscopy. The size distributions of the formed
iron silicide nanostructures were not homogeneous but, were oriented in perpendicular directions
on Si(001). Higher temperature annealing resulted in increased particles size and faceting.
Electrical characteristics showed critical defect concentration related to Fe
Összehasonlító fiziomorfológiai és termodinamikai vizsgálatok boglárkalepke-félék (Insecta, Lepidoptera, Lycaenidae) monofiletikus és nem monofiletikus fajcsoportjainak pikkelyein, különös tekintettel a diszkoloráció konvergens jelenségére = Comparative physiomorphological and thermodinamic investigations on the scales of monophyletic and non-monophyletic lycaenid butterfly (Insecta, Lepidoptera, Lycaenidae) species-groups with special regard to the convergent phenomenon of discolouration
Holarktikumban és a nearktikumban élő monofiletikus lepkefaj-csoportok szárnyain található pikkelyek micro- és nanomorfológiáját kutattuk pásztázó- és transzmissziós elektron mikroszkóppal, optikai jelenségeiket vizsgáltunk különböző spektroszkópikus technikákkal, továbbá termikus méréseket végeztünk. Megállapítottuk, hogy a magasabb taxonómiai kategóriák (génuszok, tribuszok) pikkelyeinek micro- és nanomorfológiája, és ebből fakadó spektroszkópiája kvalitatív tekintetben azonos, míg faji szinten markáns kvanitatív különbségek észlelhetők. Bemutattuk, hogy a diszkolorált lepkefajok szárnyainak fedőpikkely rétege elveszti azokat a nanostruktúrákat, amelyek fotonikus kristály elvként működő szerkezetekként működnek. Ez a minőségi változás hatékonyabb hőszabályozást eredményez, mivel az alappikelyréteg a benne levő nagy mennyiségben található pigment testek révén több napenergiát képes begyűjteni. A diszkoloráció jelensége a nappal repülő pikkelyes-szárnyú lepkék esetében széles körben kimutatható, és fontos fajképződési mechanizmus. Csillogó és matt szerkezeti színek elemzése során feltártuk, hogy a hosszú rendezettséget mutató (többkristályos) szerkezetek különféle, elsősorban szexuális kommunikációban alkalmazott fajtól függő fényes optikai szignálokat támogatnak, míg a rövid rendezettségű (magányos kristályos) szerkezetek matt színeket generálnak és univerzális univerzális szerepük álcázó vagy utánzó jellegű. Elsőként mutattuk ki a hosszú és a rövid rendezettséget mutató fotonikus kristályok jelenlétét ugyanazon lepkefaj szárnyain. | We investigated the wing scale micro- and nanomorphologies in monophyletic groups of butterflies living in the Holarctic and the Neotropic faunal regions by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, varios methods of experimental spectroscopy and we carried out thermal measurements. We found scale micro- and nanomorphology and the generated spectroscopic properties of higher taxonomic categories (genera, tribes) are qualitatively identical, but marked quantitative differencies can be detected in species level. We demonstrated that the cover scale layer in the wings of the discolored species looses nanostructures, which are working as photonic crystals int he body of the scales. This quantitative change results more sufficient thermal regulation as the ground scale layer heavily packed with pigments is able to absorb more energy from sunlight. This phenomenon is widely distributed amongst day flying Lepidoptera, and seems to be an important mechanism of speciation. By the analysis of various structural colours we demonstrated, that structures revealing long range orders (poly-crystals) support species-dependent, first of all vivid optical signals applied in sexual communication, while structures with short range orders (sinle-crystals) generate matt colours and playing an universal role in camouflage and mimicry. We have demonstrated first that photonic crystals both with long and short range orders are present in the wings of the same Lepidoptera species
Szálszerű nanoszerkezetek vizsgálata mikroszkópos és diffrakciós módszerekkel = Investigation of filament-like nanostructures by microscopic and diffraction methods
Különböző szénhidrogének és bennük oldott metallocének porlasztásos pirolízisével előállított szén nanocsövek vizsgálatával megállapítottuk, hogy xilol szénforrás, illetve ferrocén/nikkelocén keverék esetén állíthatóak elő a legjobb minőségű nanocsövek. Nitrogéntartalmú, bambuszos jellegű szén nanocsöveket állítottunk elő különböző összetételű benzol-piridin keverékek, illetve benzilamin és bennük oldott ferrocén pirolízisével. A csövek pásztázó alagútspektroszkópos görbéje a beépült nitrogén hatására aszimmetrikus, a 0.2 ? 0.8 eV tartományban többletállapotok vannak jelen. A cső mentén haladva a görbe változik, bár a jellege hasonló marad. Kis molekulasúlyú alkoholok és bennük oldott ferrocén alkalmazásával porlasztásos pirolízissel egyfalú szén nanocsöveket sikerült növesztenünk. Mennyiségük a molekulasúly növekedésével csökken, vagyis metanol esetén maximális. Megállapítottuk, hogy víz alatti váltóáramú elektromos ívben történő szén nanocső növesztéskor az elektródák 90°-os szöge esetén lesz a nanocsövek mennyisége a legnagyobb. Különböző rendezetlen szén nanocső hálózatok gáz (gőz)-érzékelési tulajdonságainak összehasonlító vizsgálatával az előállítási módszertől és a funkcionalizálás módjától függő, jelentősen eltérő érzékenységeket tapasztaltunk a különböző, alkalmazott gőzökre. A minták átlagos érzékenysége jellemzően a funkciós csoportok mennyiségével volt arányos. Ionbesugárzás hatására a minták érzékenysége nagyrészt csökkent a korábbi állapothoz képest. | Carbon nanotubes were produced by the spray pyrolysis of different hydrocarbon/metallocene solutions. Best quality tubes can be obtained in case of xylene as carbon source and ferrocene/nickelocene mixture. Nitrogen containing, bamboo shaped carbon nanotubes were produced by the pyrolysis of ferrocene solution in benzene-pyridine mixtures and benzylamine. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of the tubes showed asymmetric curves with extra states in the 0.2 ? 0.8 eV range as an effect of nitrogen incorporation. Differences could be observed along the tubes but the character of the curves was similar. Single wall carbon nanotubes were grown by the pyrolysis of ferrocene solution in low molecular weight alcohols. The amount of the tubes was the highest in case of methanol and decreased as the molecular weight increased. The amount of carbon nanotubes was found to be the highest when the angle of the graphite electrodes was 90° in case of nanotube growth in underwater AC electric arc. Comparative study of gas sensing properties of random carbon nanotube networks showed significantly varying sensitivities to the applied vapors, depending on the nanotube production method and the way of functionalization. The average sensitivity was typically proportional with the number of functional groups. Ion irradiation of the samples caused in most cases the decrease of the sensitivity
Photonic Nanoarchitectures in Butterfly Scales Allowing Species Identification
AbstractWe investigated photonic crystal colored blue butterfly wings with the use of optical spectroscopy. The extracted data from the optical spectra were analyzed by artificial neural network software. Over 100 exemplars of nine related Polyommatus species could be classified with 96% accuracy using only the spectral data measured in a nondestructive way
Substance specific chemical sensing with pristine and modified photonic nanoarchitectures occurring in blue butterfly wing scales
Nowadays, the potential applications of photonic crystal type materials in sensing [1] are in the focus of attention [2,3]. As sensors penetr ate the everyday life,
the vigorous development of sensorics tries to cover the need for miniature sensor systems which are capable of making distinction between vapors of different vola tile organic compounds (VOCs) and have fast response time combined with low energy consum ption [3]. Selective chemical sensors based on photonic nanoarchitectures, like those in the wing scales of butterflies possessing structural coloration [4] may offer cheap solution to this problem
SZÍNEK HARMÓNIÁJA: A BOGLÁRKALEPKÉK SZERKEZETI KÉK SZÍNÉNEK FAJFELISMERÉSI SZEREPE – I. RÉSZ
Az MTA TTK MFA Nanoszerkezetek Osztályán pásztázó
és transzmissziós elektronmikroszkópos módszerekkel,
valamint optikai reflexiós spektrometriával
tanulmányoztuk kilenc boglárkalepkefaj szárnyainak
kék színét adó pikkelyek nanoszerkezetét és optikai
tulajdonságait, valamint ezek kapcsolatát a lepkék
rajzási idejével. A lepkepikkelyek fotonikus nanoszerkezeti
jellemzôit egy saját fejlesztésû számítógépes
program segítségével jellemeztük a pásztázó és
transzmissziós elektronmikroszkóppal készült felvételeken,
míg a színt a szárnyakon mért fényvisszaverési
spektrumok alapján határoztuk meg. Az így nyert
szerkezeti és spektrális információk alapján mesterséges
neurális hálózat segítségével kimutattuk a lepkék
A reflexiós spektrumokat
további elemzésnek is alávetettük: közös színinger-
diagramban ábrázoltuk a megvizsgált egyedek
színinger-koordinátáit úgy, hogy számításba vettük a
tanulmányozott boglárkalepkék szemének négyféle
színérzékelô receptorát. Az így adódó háromdimenziós
színingertérben fajonként sokkal jobban elkülönülnek
az egyedek színinger-koordinátái, mint a
három emberi színérzékelô receptor érzékenységi
görbéit felhasználó, korábban alkalmazott kétdimenziós
színingertérben. Megvizsgáltuk továbbá a lepkefajokra
jellemzô színek és a lepkék rajzási idejének
korrelációját, amihez több mint 100 példány fényvisszaverését
mértük roncsolásmentesen. Kimutattuk,
hogy a hasonló színû fajok életterükben idôben elkülönülnek,
így eredményesen kiküszöbölik a szín helytelen
azonosításából eredô tévesztéseket, egyben lehetôvé
téve a sikeresebb párválasztást
Optical properties of bioinspired disordered photonic nanoarchitectures
Bioinspired 1+2D nanoarchitectures inspired by the quasi-ordered structures occurring in
photonic nanoarchitectures of biological origin, like for example butterfly scales, were
produced by depositing a layer of SiO2 nanospheres (156 nm and 292 nm in diameter) on Si
wafers, over which a regular multilayer composed from three alternating layers of SiO2 and
TiO2 was deposited by physical vapor deposition. Flat multilayers were deposited in the same
run on oxidized Si (324 nm SiO2 thickness) for comparison. Different types of disorder (in
plane and out of plane) were purposefully allowed in the 1+2D nanoarchitectures. The
positions of the specular reflection maxima for the flat multilayer and for the two different
bioinspired nanoarchitectures were found to be similar. Additionally to this, the bioinspired
nanoarchitectures exhibited angle independent diffuse reflection too, which was absent in the
flat multilayer. Different model calculations were made to explain the specular and diffuse
optical properties of the samples. Satisfactory agreement was obtained between experimental
data and model calculations
Substrate-induced strain in carbon nanodisks
Abstract Graphitic nanodisks of typically 20 – 50 nm in thickness, produced by the so-called Kvaerner Carbon Black and Hydrogen Process were dispersed on gold substrate and investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and confocal Raman spectroscopy. The roughness of the gold surface was drastically changed by annealing at 400 °C. AFM measurements show that this change in the surface roughness induces changes also in the topography of the nanodisks, as they closely follow the corrugation of the gold substrate. This leads to strained nanodisks, which is confirmed also by confocal Raman microscopy. We found that the FE-SEM contrast obtained from the disks depends on the working distance used during the image acquisition by In-lens detection, a phenomenon which we explain by the decrease in the amount of electrons reaching the detector due to diffraction. This process may affect the image contrast in the case of other layered materials, like hexagonal boron nitride, and other planar hybrid nanostructures, too
